Orthoptic Assessments
An Orthoptic Assessment, also known as a Binocular Vision Assessment, looks beyond how clearly you can see to assess how well your eyes focus, move and work together to maintain clear, comfortable single vision.
You may benefit from an Orthoptic Assessment if you or your child:
-
squint when looking at things up close or in the distance;
-
blink excessively, particularly during visual tasks;
-
rub your eyes frequently;
-
close one eye or adopt an unusual head position to see more clearly or comfortably;
-
are sensitive to bright light;
-
have an eye that appears to turn inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards;
-
hold books, screens or other close work unusually close;
-
experience headaches across the forehead, particularly after reading or screen use;
-
develop tired, sore or strained eyes after close work such as reading, writing or using a computer or tablet.
Important: Binocular vision problems can affect both adults and children. Children, however, may be less likely to recognise or report symptoms because they often assume that the way they see is normal.
How do I use my Binocular Vision skills?
Your binocular vision skills are used throughout the day whenever your eyes need to work together, change focus or judge where things are in space.
You use these skills when:
-
looking from something close to something far away, such as copying from the board at school, looking from a computer screen to someone across the room, or checking the speedometer and returning your eyes to the road;
-
keeping words and objects clear while reading across a page or following something that is moving;
-
using both eyes together to judge depth and distance, which is important for everyday activities, sport and play;
-
coordinating what you see with your hand movements, such as guiding a pencil across the page when writing.
We recommend having an Optometry assessment before seeing our Orthoptist. This helps ensure the health of the eyes has been checked and that any required glasses prescription is up to date.
Following your Orthoptic Assessment, we will explain the findings and discuss the most appropriate treatment options. Depending on your results, these may include prescription glasses, prisms and/or Vision Therapy.
